The two exam boards — Cambridge and ZIMSEC
In Zimbabwe, secondary and sixth form students sit either Cambridge or ZIMSEC examinations — or in some cases both. Understanding the difference, and knowing where your child will sit, is essential for planning effective exam preparation.
Cambridge International (IGCSE & A Level)
Cambridge IGCSE (O Level equivalent) and Cambridge International A Level are internationally recognised qualifications administered by Cambridge Assessment. Papers are set and marked by Cambridge examiners.
ZIMSEC (O Level & A Level)
The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council sets and marks its own O Level and A Level papers. ZIMSEC qualifications are the standard for the majority of Zimbabwean schools and are accepted for university entry within Zimbabwe.
Private candidates
Students not enrolled in a school — or who need to resit subjects — can register as private candidates at an approved exam centre. This is common for gap-year students, school-leavers, and those adding extra subjects.
Two sitting seasons
Both Cambridge and ZIMSEC offer examinations twice per year — a June/July sitting and a November sitting. Registration deadlines are several months in advance of each sitting.
How exam registration works for private candidates
- 1
Identify an approved exam centre
Cambridge and ZIMSEC each maintain a list of approved centres in Zimbabwe. Centres vary by location, subjects offered, and administration quality. We can advise on reputable centres in your area.
- 2
Contact the centre directly
Each centre manages its own registration intake. Contact the exams officer at your chosen centre early — several months before the exam sitting — and ask for their specific requirements, fees, and deadlines.
- 3
Submit registration documents
Registration typically requires: a completed registration form, proof of identity (birth certificate or national ID), passport photographs, and payment of the exam fee.
- 4
Confirm subject registrations
Ensure every subject you intend to sit is listed on your registration confirmation. Errors or omissions can be difficult to correct after the registration window closes. Keep copies of all submitted documents.
- 5
Prepare for the exam at the right centre
Familiarise yourself with the exam centre location, entry procedures, and rules well before exam day. Some students visit the centre in advance to remove uncertainty.
How Prime Scholars helps with exam preparation
Board-specific exam technique
Cambridge and ZIMSEC mark schemes differ in important ways. Our tutors teach the specific command word responses, structured answer formats, and marking patterns that each board rewards.
Past paper practice under time pressure
We use genuine past papers from recent exam sittings. Students practise answering under timed conditions and receive detailed feedback on how their responses would be marked.
Exam countdown planning
As the exam date approaches, we build a structured revision plan around your child's specific weak areas — not a generic revision schedule, but one based on diagnostic data gathered across sessions.
Mock exam sessions
In the final weeks before an exam sitting, we run full mock exam sessions — timed, marked, and debrief-reviewed. Many students find these the most valuable sessions of the preparation period.
Frequently asked questions
Can Prime Scholars help me find an exam centre?
We can point you towards commonly used approved centres in Harare and advise on which centres have a strong reputation for private candidate administration. We cannot register on your behalf, but we can guide you through the process.
My child's school does not offer a subject they need. What can they do?
Your child can register as a private candidate for specific subjects at an approved external centre, while still sitting their school subjects through the school. This is common for students adding Economics, Computer Science, or a second science.
How far in advance should exam prep start?
Ideally, structured exam preparation begins 3–4 months before the exam sitting. For students with significant knowledge gaps, 6 months is better. The trial lesson diagnostic helps us assess how much preparation time is needed realistically.
Do you help with both June and November sittings?
Yes. We work with students preparing for both the June/July and November exam sittings throughout the year. Session intensity is typically higher in the 6–8 weeks immediately before each sitting.
What is the difference between Cambridge O Level and Cambridge IGCSE?
Cambridge O Level and Cambridge IGCSE are both Cambridge qualifications at roughly the same academic level. IGCSE is the more modern, internationally standardised version most Cambridge-curriculum schools in Zimbabwe offer. Our tutors cover both.
