How It Works

1-on-1 online tutoring

Your child and a specialist tutor — one hour of completely focused, personalised teaching. No other students. No generic explanations. Delivered live on Zoom from anywhere in Zimbabwe.

What makes 1-on-1 online different from a group class

In a 1-on-1 session, the entire hour belongs to your child. The tutor is not managing eight students or pacing content to the middle of the group — they are responding exclusively to what your child does not yet understand, adapting the session in real time based on every answer and every question.

Completely personalised pace

The tutor spends as long as needed on each concept. If your child grasps something quickly, they move on. If a concept needs 25 minutes of different approaches, that is what it gets.

Active diagnosis throughout

The tutor does not just explain and move on. They probe understanding with targeted questions, check working step by step, and identify the root cause of errors rather than just marking answers right or wrong.

Your child talks more

In a 1-on-1 session, your child cannot hide. They must explain their thinking, attempt questions, and ask questions. Students learn more by doing — and in a solo session, there is no avoiding it.

Written session report

After every 1-on-1 session, you receive a written report covering what was taught, what errors or gaps were identified, what was corrected, and what the next session should focus on.

How a 1-on-1 online session is structured

  1. 1

    Opening check-in (5 minutes)

The tutor briefly reviews the homework from the previous session and asks your child what they found difficult since they last met. This shapes the focus for the session without wasting time on things your child already knows.

  2. 2

    Targeted teaching (30–35 minutes)

The tutor teaches directly to the identified gap — the specific concept, question type, or technique that is costing marks. Examples are drawn from past exam papers so the teaching is immediately applicable.

  3. 3

    Exam-style practice (15–20 minutes)

Your child attempts actual past-paper questions while the tutor watches the working in real time. Errors are caught and corrected as they happen. The tutor explains how the mark scheme would award or deduct marks.

  4. 4

Debrief and homework set (5 minutes)

The session ends with a clear summary: what was covered, what was improved, and specific homework to do before the next session — not "do page 34" but "attempt these three questions using today's technique."

What do I need for an online session?

No specialist equipment needed. Any device with a camera, a microphone, and a stable internet connection will work. Most students use a laptop. A tablet or phone works but a larger screen is better for working through diagrams and equations.

Device

Laptop strongly recommended — larger screen makes sharing working easier. Tablet or smartphone are acceptable. The tutor will share their screen for explanations and can view your child's screen if needed.

Internet connection

A standard home broadband connection or mobile data is sufficient. If the connection drops briefly, Zoom reconnects automatically. The tutor will pause and recap if a reconnection causes a content gap.

Zoom (free)

Sessions run on Zoom. Your child joins via a meeting link sent before each session. The free Zoom app works on all devices. No Zoom account is required for students.

Study materials

Have the relevant exercise book, calculator, and any recent test papers to hand. The tutor may ask your child to photograph a recent test to review during the session.

Frequently asked questions

How is online different from in-person — is it less effective?

For most students at O Level and A Level, online 1-on-1 sessions are just as effective as in-person. The tutor can see your child's working, annotate in real time, and use a shared digital whiteboard. The key variable is the quality of the tutor and the structure of the session — both are the same regardless of delivery mode.

Can I observe the session?

Yes. You can join the Zoom call as an observer. For older students (Form 4–6), many perform better with parents off-camera, but we leave that decision entirely to you.

What happens if my child's internet drops mid-session?

The tutor waits up to 5 minutes for reconnection. If the connection cannot be restored, the session is rescheduled at no additional charge.

How long is each session?

Standard sessions are 60 minutes. Extended 90-minute sessions are available on request for intensive exam preparation. The pricing page lists rates for both.

Can we fix a regular weekly time slot?

Yes, and this is the most common arrangement. A fixed weekly slot means the tutor blocks that time exclusively for your child, and your child knows exactly when to prepare.
